The Cough, Cold & Flu season is upon us. Yikes!
Besides the Lemon Turmeric Ginger Tea that I drink every morning which has helped to prevent these illnesses, it always seems that someone in my family (mainly my husband) gets a cough every year.
This Homemade Cough Syrup has helped him more than anything. Once he has the first cough, I whip up a batch!
It’s so easy to make & you probably have all the ingredients in your pantry.
It’s so much better than anything you buy over the counter or even prescriptions with all the nasty chemicals that they put in them.
Honey
is Anti-viral, Anti-bacterial & Anti-fungal & Anti-inflammatory. It is proven to work just as well or better than over-the-counter cough medicines without nasty chemicals.
Honey also helps to boost the immune system.
NOTE: Do Not give honey to children under 12 months of age.
Lemon Juice
is Anti-bacterial & is rich in Vitamin C. Lemon Juice helps to loosen the mucus that causes coughs.
Apple Cider Vinegar
is made from apple cider that has been fermented to form health-promoting probiotics and enzymes.
Apple Cider Vinegar helps to thin out mucus & contains beneficial bacteria that can help give your immune system a boost.
Make sure it’s raw, unfiltered and organic with the mother still intact as this provides the most apple cider vinegar benefits.
Cinnamon
contains natural antimicrobial, antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral properties.
Cinnamon’s essential oils contain powerful immune-boosting compounds that can also protect against bacterial infections, which can cause conditions like the common cold, strep throat, & pneumonia.
Cinnamon contains a compound that is anti-spasmodic (cinnamaldehyde) which calms down the desire to cough
Cayenne Pepper
is full of beta-carotene and antioxidants that support the immune system. It helps in breaking up and moving congested mucus.
Ginger
is anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, full of antioxidants & has therapeutic compounds like gingerol, shogaol, paradol & zingerone.
Ginger helps to eliminate mucus from the lungs which can lessen a cough and is known to be a natural decongestant.

I love this cough remedy recipe – I always keep a batch in the fridge!
I usually already have all the ingredients on hand, which is an added bonus. I took some last night because my scratchy throat had been bothering me all day, and I felt like it might get me coughing overnight.
This morning my throat was feeling much improved, so I took more remedy and put extra coconut oil in my morning tea. Wow, that was less than 30 minutes ago, and my throat is even better than when I woke up. 🙂
Hi Anne! I agree 100%. Glad you are feeling better! Thanks for sharing!
