What are Essential Oils?

Essential Oils are natural aromatic compounds that come from plants or trees. They are created usually, through either steam distillation or cold-pressed extraction. The most common way essential oils are created is through steam distillation. This is where you let the steam rise through it & it separates the water from the oil.

Most Citrus Oils are done through cold-pressed extraction. They are not done on the flesh but on the citrus peel instead. It is done pretty much like cold-pressed olive oil is done today. A very clean & pure process.

Essential Oils are highly concentrated healing compounds anywhere from 10x to upwards of a 70x concentration. Here are my Top 5 Favorite Essential Oils! If you are not sure where to start with Essential Oils, these are the ones I can't live without! www.thehealthnutmama.com

For example, it takes 150 lbs of lavender flowers to equal 1 oz of Lavender oil & 65 lbs of rose petals to equal 1 15 ml bottle of Rose Oil. That is Amazing! Now you see why it costs so much for those tiny little bottles. In other words, a little goes a long way!

What are Carrier Oils?

Because Essential Oils are so concentrated, you need to dilute most oils with a carrier oil. (Oregano & Peppermint Oil need to be diluted)

Dilution increases the surface area of absorption and with certain oils can prevent sensitivities.

Carrier Oils

For most people, it is recommended to do 10% dilution.  That equals 5 drops of essential oil per 1/2 teaspoon of carrier oil

    Hi Rene!

Do you know what are the best essential oils to use to avoid scars from surgery? Specially when they have not been completely healed yet. I read something about mixing coconut or jasmine oil with tea tree oil. What would be your recommendation?

    • Renee' says:

      Hi Valerie,
I like to use coconut oil (my favorite) or any carrier oil mixed with Frankincense Oil & Lavender Oil. You could also add a little Vitamin E oil too.

Hi. Great artical. Thanks for sharing! I’m fairly new to essential oils & am trying to find out which brands are the better ones. Can you give me your personal opinon for the top 3 or 4 to shop from? They all claim to be pure, but not all are I’m discovering, after the fact.
    Thanks!

Hi JaaDeen, Thank you for your comment. Young Living & DoTerra Oils are supposed to be of the highest quality. They are both MLM’s (multi-level marketing) therefore, I don’t sell them. They are more expensive than some of the others because of being an MLM. I personally am mostly using the Majestic Pure Brand. It says it is 100% natural, steam distilled and pure. Non-toxin, no additives, unfiltered and undiluted with no fillers; therapeutic grade; packaged in the USA. It has very good reviews on Amazon. I do like that it comes in 4 oz. bottles & has a dropper. All for 1/2 the price of the “popular” brands. I have been very pleased so far. I burned my hand a few months ago, & put their lavender oil on immediately. The pain went away & left no redness or blisters. I hope this helps.

I just got a diffuser, so I’m looking for some practical oils to use. It’s currently in my office, so I need to get something that can help with focus.

    • Renee' says:

Hi Lisa, try a mixture of peppermint oil & cedar-wood oil. Both of these oils have been shown to improve mental alertness, awareness & to improve energy & focus.
